How to install and configure the SATO WS408 printer for first-time use.

Resolution/Answer
Before You Begin
Ensure you have the following items:
- SATO WS4 printer
- Power adapter and power cord
- USB, Ethernet, or Serial cable (depending on your connection method)
- Label roll
- Ribbon (for Thermal Transfer printing)
- Computer with printer driver installed
Step 1: Unpack the Printer
- Remove the printer and accessories from the packaging.
- Verify that all components are included.
- Remove any protective tape and packing materials from the printer.
Step 2: Connect the Power
- Connect the power adapter to the printer.
- Plug the power cord into a power outlet.
- Turn on the printer using the power switch.
The Power LED should illuminate.
Step 3: Load Labels
- Open the printer cover.
- Place the label roll onto the media holder.
- Feed the labels through the media path.
- Adjust the media guides to fit the label width.
- Close the printer cover securely.
Step 4: Install Ribbon (Thermal Transfer Mode Only)
If using Thermal Transfer labels:
- Open the printer cover.
- Install the ribbon supply roll onto the ribbon holder.
- Route the ribbon according to the diagram inside the printer.
- Attach the ribbon leader to the take-up core.
- Rotate the take-up core to remove slack.
- Close the printer cover.
Note: Skip this step when using Direct Thermal labels.
Step 5: Connect the Printer to the Computer
USB Connection
- Connect the USB cable between the printer and computer.
- Wait for Windows to detect the device.
Ethernet Connection
- Connect the network cable to the printer.
- Connect the other end to the network switch or router.
- Verify the network indicator is active.
Step 6: Install the Printer Driver
- Download the latest SATO printer driver from the SATO support website.
- Run the installation package.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Select the correct connection type (USB or Network).
- Complete the installation.
Step 7: Calibrate the Media Sensor
You need to calibrate the media sensor to print properly. WS printers provide transmissive and reflective sensor calibration. Take the following steps to use them.
- Make sure the media is properly loaded, the print module is closed, and the printer’s power switch is set to the OFF position.
- Press and hold the FEED button and turn on the printer.
- Both status lights illuminate solid orange for a few seconds. Next, they turn to green shortly and then turn to other colors. Do one of the following to select the sensor:
- If you want to calibrate the transmissive sensor, when LED 1 turns to green and LED 2 turns to red, release the FEED button immediately.
- If you want to calibrate the reflective sensor, when LED 1 turns to green and LED 2 turns to orange, release the FEED button immediately.
- Press the FEED button. The media calibration is complete after the printer feeds 3-4 labels and stops.
Step 8: Print a Test Label
- Open Devices and Printers on your computer.
- Right-click the SATO WS408 /W412 printer.
- Select Printer Properties.
- Click Print Test Page.
- Confirm the label prints correctly.
Setup Complete
Your SATO WS4 printer is now ready for printing.
